The Cavalcade of Scientists is part of the Tall Poppy Campaign initiated by the Australian Institute of Policy & Science to celebrate Australian excellence and endeavour in all fields. The Campaign was inaugurated in 1998 during the celebrations for the centenary of Howard Florey, and during 1999 celebrated the lives and achievements of Frank Macfarlane Burnet, Ian Clunies Ross and Jean Macnamara.
The Cavalcade of Scientists comprises a number
of outstanding scientists, either Australian born and bred, or who
have undertaken their major work in Australia. Nominations were sought
from the Australian
Academy of Science, the Academy
of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and the CSIRO. The Cavalcade focuses on the
major achievements of each of the scientists selected including, in
some cases, teams of two scientists, and past, as well as present,
scientists.
